Slip rings

Slip rings are electromechanical components used for transmitting electricity and signals in rotating systems. They mainly consist of conductive rings, brushes, bearings and wires. To effectively transmit electrical signals, slip ring manufacturers usually fix carbon brushes (a type of brush) in a certain position. And this involves the use of carbon brush holders.

So, what is a carbon brush holder? What is it made of and what are its functions? Today, let ByTune take you to explore the answers to these questions!

What is a Carbon Brush Holder?

When the slip ring rotates and transmits signals, the carbon brushes are often set at a certain angle and remain stationary in most cases.

The carbon brush holders are installed on the stator part of the motor or generator. They are mainly used to fix the slip ring brushes and enable the carbon brushes to maintain good contact with the rotating conductive rings. Visually, it looks a bit like a clip device and has enough space to hold the carbon brushes. Do you know what they are used for?

Functions of Slip Ring Brush Holders

1. Fixing Carbon Brushes

Carbon brushes are relatively small and brittle components. The carbon brush holders can firmly clamp the carbon brushes and fix them in the appropriate position. This can prevent the carbon brushes from shifting or falling off when the motor is running.

2. Conducting Current

These holders also provide electrical connections for the carbon brushes. When the motor or generator is working, the current flows from the fixed circuit of the equipment through the holders to the carbon brushes. Then the carbon brushes transfer the current to the slip ring or commutator. In this way, the armature winding or rotor winding of the motor can work normally.

3. Ensuring Good Contact

Through the elastic structure or adjusting device of the carbon brush holders, an appropriate contact pressure is maintained between the conductive rings and the carbon brushes. This can avoid poor contact and electric sparks between them. The friction between them will also reach an optimal balance, making the wear slower.

4. Guiding the Movement of Carbon Brushes (for Relative Motion)

During the operation of the motor, the conductive rings will rotate with the rotation of the equipment. The carbon brushes are fixed on the holders, remain relatively stationary and contact them to conduct current. The carbon brush holders can guide the carbon brushes to slide smoothly along the circumference of the rings and provide electrical connections for the rotating parts of the equipment (such as drums, wind turbine blades, grinding wheels, etc.).

What Materials are they Made of?

Cast Silicon Brass

Cast silicon brass has a relatively high electrical conductivity, generally between 13 - 17% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard). It can conduct the current between the carbon brushes and the rings very efficiently. In addition, the hardness of this kind of holder reaches at least HB80 and can withstand the long-term friction of the carbon brushes in the slip ring and maintain the stability of its structure. However, its density is relatively large and may not be very suitable for applications with strict weight limitations (such as aerospace).

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel carbon brush holders contain alloy elements such as chromium and nickel. Compared with the corrosion rate of ordinary carbon steel holders (0.1 - 0.2 mm per year), the corrosion rate of stainless steel holders is as low as less than 0.01 mm per year. When the slip ring equipment is used in different environmental conditions, they are all corrosion-resistant. This includes industrial environments with moisture and corrosive gases (such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride). In addition, stainless steel holders can withstand temperatures of approximately - 40 - 600 °C.

Thermoplastic Materials

The density of thermoplastic materials is between 0.9 - 1.4 g/cm³, much lower than that of metal materials. When they are used as carbon brush holders, they have great advantages in weight-sensitive equipment (such as small hand-held electric tools). Their weight may be about 30 - 50% lighter than similar products using metal holders. In addition, plastic materials have very good electrical insulation and can prevent current leakage between the internal components of the slip ring.

Usage tips for carbon brush holders

Keep Clean

After the slip ring has been used for a period of time, dust, debris and residues will accumulate inside the slip ring components. It is beneficial to clean these components and the carbon brush holders. Because dust particles and metal debris may affect the contact between them and make the electrical conduction discontinuous.

Fix Firmly

The carbon brush holders should be firmly fixed on the base of the motor or equipment. Otherwise, the positions of the brushes of the slip ring will shift or even jump out of the surface of the slip ring, causing the equipment to stop. Technicians should tighten the fixing bolts according to the specified torque.

Pressure Check

The position of the carbon brush holders should be designed according to the type and specifications of the motor. This is related to the contact pressure between the internal components of the slip ring. If the contact pressure is too small, electric sparks will be generated and burn the surfaces. But if the pressure is too large, it may also aggravate the wear of the carbon brushes and the rings.

Lubrication

When the carbon brushes of the slip ring have a certain amount of sliding within the holders, in order to reduce friction, we can use a small amount of lubricant. But the lubricant should not touch the contact surfaces between the carbon brushes and the rings.
