
What Is Through Hole Slip Ring
A through-hole slip ring is an electromechanical device used to transmit power, signals or data from a stationary device to a rotating structure. The slip ring is mainly composed of a rotor (rotating part), a stator (fixed part), a conductive ring, a brush and other components. It has a central hollow shaft or through hole that allows other components (such as cables, fluid lines or mechanical shafts) to pass through the middle to connect with the device.
Working Principle of Through Hole Slip Rings
Through-hole slip rings are mainly composed of rotors and stators. The rotor contains mutually insulated conductive rings, which are usually made of metals such as copper. They are distributed in a ring shape and concentrically mounted on the rotating shaft, rotating with the rotating parts of the equipment. The stator is equipped with a set of graphite brushes, which are tightly pressed against the rotating conductive rings by springs and other devices.
When the rotor of the equipment starts working, the external current or signal is connected to the brushes of the stator through wires, and then transmitted from the brushes to the conductive rings. As the conductive rings continue to rotate, they are transmitted to the rotating equipment to complete its work tasks, such as driving the motor to run, powering electronic equipment, etc. Finally, the current and signal flow back from the rotating part to the stator through another conductive ring and the corresponding brush, forming a complete current loop.

Difference between Through Hole Slip Ring vs Capsule slip ring
Through-hole slip rings and capsule slip rings differ in many aspects, and they are also used in different devices. Let's take a look at them now!
Structure
● Through Hole Slip Ring: The main body has a central through hole, which allows the rotating shaft or other parts that need to rotate to pass directly. Its overall structure is generally cylindrical, consisting of two major parts: the rotor and the stator.
● Capsule Slip Ring: Its appearance is similar to a capsule-shaped or cylindrical closed structure, and its internal space is used to accommodate conductive parts and transmission channels. These channels can be used to transmit current, signals and other data. The layout of the transmission channel usually adopts a layered or spiral design so that the signals do not interfere with each other.
Installation Method
● Through Hole Slip Ring:
(1) Axial Installation: Due to the design of its central through hole, the through-hole slip ring can be installed through the central shaft and directly sleeved on the central shaft. Then we fix it to a specific position on the shaft through fastening devices (such as nuts, bolts, etc.).
(2) Flange Installation: Through-hole slip rings are usually equipped with flanges, which can be installed on the fixed structure of the equipment by flange connection. During installation, we bolt the flange to the mounting surface of the equipment.
● Capsule Slip Ring:
(1) Embedded Installation: It is suitable for embedded installation inside the equipment. In some applications with limited space, it is integrated into the internal space without taking up additional external space.
(2) Direct Connection: The small capsule slip ring can be directly connected to the rotating and fixed parts of the equipment through the connection ports at both ends. This installation method is simple and fast, and no additional mounting brackets or fixtures are required.
Size
● Through Hole Slip Ring: Its size has a large range of variation, and the outer diameter can range from a few millimeters to hundreds of millimeters. The inner diameter varies according to the size of the central through hole, generally matching the size of the rotating shaft or component that needs to pass through. The height ranges from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters or even higher.
● Capsule Slip Ring: The size of this slip ring is usually relatively small, with an outer diameter generally ranging from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters. The inner diameter is designed according to the needs of the internal transmission channel and is usually relatively small. In addition, they are also relatively low to adapt to the installation space restrictions inside the equipment.
Application
● Through Hole Slip Ring: This slip ring is used in applications that require an additional element to pass through the center, such as wind turbines, rotating camera systems, robotic arms, medical devices, and marine equipment.
● Capsule Slip Ring: It is used in applications where space is limited and a central channel is not required. Examples include smaller robotic systems, medical devices, instruments, and certain types of consumer electronics.

Installation Instructions of Through Hole Slip Rings

Warning
(1) Unless otherwise specified, this series of slip rings can only be used in an environment with a humidity of 60%RH or less and a temperature of -20℃~+60℃. The slip rings should be kept away from dust and moisture.
(2) If the slip ring is used outdoors, it needs to be shielded.
(3) The slip ring cannot support the weight of the equipment connected to it. The rotating equipment should be firmly fixed so that its weight does not fall on the rotor.
(4) There is no force on the slip ring in the direction parallel to the axis.
(5) The lead surface must not be damaged when the equipment rotates, and all leads cannot bear weight when arranging the wires.
(6) Due to the possible geometric mismatch between the customer's application and the slip ring, "hard mounting" at both ends of the slip ring (i.e., fixing the rotor and stator so that they do not float during operation) is not recommended as it may cause premature failure.
(7) Unless otherwise specified, all parameters should be within the specified specifications, such as:
1.Operating speed: 0-300rpm
2.Voltage: 0~380VAC/DC
3.Current: ≤5A/circuit
4.Dielectric strength: 1000V@50HZ or higher between each circuit
5.Protection level: IP54
Installation Guide
Shaft installation method
(1) Install the slip ring to the desired position and tighten the four fixing screws (not provided) to the shaft. The maximum torque is 25 1b-in (not to be exceeded).
(2) Run the wires and make the necessary connections. Do not let the wiring restrict the free rotation of the slip ring. Do not restrict the wiring so that the wires are bent (cold working). Otherwise, it will eventually cause failure (wire breakage).
(3) Use 5/16 (maximum diameter) screws to properly secure the anti-rotation plate.
Flange installation (customized) method
(1) Align the mounting holes on the flange with the mounting base, and then install the flat washers and mounting screws (not provided). Tighten the screws securely.
(2) Run the wires and make the necessary connections. Do not allow the wiring to restrict the free rotation of the slip ring.
(3) Use 5/16 (maximum diameter) screws to properly secure the anti-rotation piece.
